Flight of the Conchords Fansterpiece

If you are a Flight of the Conchordsfan, you'll love this Fansterpiece Mashup of "Hiphoppopotomus/ Rhymnocerous." I wish I'd known about this project, because I totally would have submitted a video to HBO.

Meeting Keane, and other brushes with stardom in 2009

If you've read my blog for any amount of time, you know that I love going to concerts, symphonies, operas, plays, and musicals.
My favorite concert of 2009 was Keane at the Hollywood Palladium (with Mat Kearney as the opener). My "bosom friend" Esther treated me to my ticket for my birthday, and we met up with my friends Kathryn and Elizabeth in Hollywood for a night we'll never forget last May. I was recently going through my pictures of 2009, and realized that I never blogged about my experience meeting Keane after the concert, nor had I mentioned other "celebrities" I met in the past year.
The Palladium is a fantastic venue, and I was excited to actually be there for a performance (after being a lifetime closet fan of The Lawrence Welk Show.) It underwent a very extensive renovation that was completed 6 months earlier in 2008, but it still had the retro charm. Mat Kearney, who has become one of my other recent music obsessions, performed a stellar opening set (and Esther and I saw Mat again in SLC in October). Keane's set was phenomenal...the best performance I'd seen of their three concerts I've attended (Coincidentally, all in LA). After the show, us girls were DETERMINED to meet our favorite band. We waited out on the street by the door, shivering in the cold next to the tour bus, for over an hour until the boys from Battle came out to greet their adoring fans.

Esther with Tim

Kat with Tim
An awkward shot of me with Tim (there wasn't any time for retaking pics)
Tom greeting his adoring fans
Esther fondling Richard's ear (I mean, caressing his cheek)
Another embarassingly bad shot of me by Tom post-autograph (I was the dedicated photographer of the post-concert experience, so there aren't any decent pics of me)

I was lucky to go to more concerts in 2009 than any other prior year. Despite my anorexic bank account, family and friends with connections hooked me up with great tickets throughout the year (They no longer think it odd when I tell them which concert tickets I want for my birthday and Christmas) I also got some insanely cheap tickets off Twitter and fan sites. Here's my 2009 list:

January: Missy Higgins, Justin Nozuka, and Lenka at Atlanta Center Stage
February: Flight of the Conchords at Atlanta Fox Theater
2 Fox Elipsus Shows (Austell and Snellville, GA)
March: New Kids on the Block at The Bi-Lo Center, Greenville, SC
April: Jersey Boys in Chicago (technically a Broadway musical, but it FELT like a concert)
May: Keane and Mat Kearney at the Hollywood Palladium
June: No Doubt at Atlanta's Lakewood Amphitheater
August: Greg Laswell and Elizabeth and the Catapult at the Murray Theater
Iron and Wine at Gallivan Center, SLC (sort of...long story)
October: Mat Kearney and Vedera at In the Venue, SLC
November: Imogen Heap at In The Venue, SLC
Justin Nozuka and Elizabeth and the Catapult, Glass House, Pomona, CA
December: Natalie Cole with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Salt Lake City
Peter Breinholt (et al.) at Rose Wagner Theater, Salt Lake City

Throughout the year, I did meet a handful of celebs. Here are the pictures I was able to snag...

Me with Elizabeth (of Elizabeth and the Catapult)

Missy Higgins (I was 5 feet away from her at the merch table, but Taylor didn't want to wait in line to meet her) I DID have a wonderful 5 minute conversation with her in 2005 in SLC.

Rosie with Peter Breinholt (I could write a whole blog post about these two...)

Rosie and I with Ryan Shupe (of Ryan Shupe and the Rubber Band)

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir - obviously, I didn't meet the whole choir, but I have several friends and relatives who are in MoTab, or the Orchestra on Temple Square

Waiting in line to meet David Archuleta at his Christmas CD signing in November
This goofy Archie kid went to Murray High, where I graduated, and used to hang out with my sister Mary. When she came with us to the CD signing, he said "Hey Mary, I like your hoodie!"

Right Now (1992 edition)

RIGHT NOW...I am watching my favorite music video of 1992.
And the Crystal Pepsi Super Bowl commercial that followed...

Don't wanna wait 'til tomorrow, why put it off another day?
One by one, little problems build up and stand in our way. Oh!

One step ahead, one step behind it
Now ya gotta run to get even
Make future plans I'll dream about yesterday, hey!
Come on turn, turn this thing around

(Right now) Hey! It's your tomorrow
(Right now) Come on, it's everything
(Right now) Catch your magic moment
Do it right here and now
It means everything

Miss a beat, you lose a rhythm and nothin' falls into place. No!
Only missed by a fraction
Slipped a little off your pace. Oh!

The more things you get, the more you want
Just trade in one for another
Workin' so hard to make it easy
Whoa, got to turn. Come on, turn this thing around

Did anyone else love this song? It was my pubescent theme song, empowering me until I discovered alternative music, and delved into Depeche Mode, The Cure, TMBG, INXS, U2, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and all those other bands I obsessed over. (I still considered it my theme song until I heard Cake's "The Distance.")

Dare to be Stupid

Last night Taylor and I watched a kinda downer movie and needed to cleanse the "drama" palate, if you will. He randomly put on this video...a favorite from my childhood, and all was well again. It's seriously great advice...dare to be stupid. Dare to live outside the box. Dare to be yourself. Dare to be creative. It's secretly been one of my personal anthems. Put down the chainsaw and listen to me:

Long live AL!

McCartney (1970)

If I am ever accused of having an affair, it will be having a love affair with a music album. Luckily, this "affair" can be shared with my husband, as he is also a music aficionado. Our first date was spent reviewing the highlights of our CD collections, concerts we'd attended, and lyrics to songs that best described ourselves. All through the time we dated, he made me a weekly love song mix CD, which I still treasure all. When we married, and our music libraries melded...it was almost a joke how many common albums we had.

A while back, I posted a blog about the 25 music albums that have had a profound effect on my life. My top two bands of all time are The Beatles and U2, although I consider myself a fan of hundreds of musical groups (as my Myspace profile would attest to, since I only hang onto it for band updates and concert announcements) I thought I'd highlight an album which I have fallen in love with...all over again. It is McCartney by Paul McCartney from 1970.

McCartney was Paul's first solo album, and it was released one week after The Beatles officially disbanded. It was in production at the same time as their "Let it Be" album, as tensions between bandmates were tearing the Fab Four apart. It shot to the top of the US Charts, and in the UK was second only to Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," which remained at #1 for 41 weeks.

According to Wikipedia, "With a raw honesty that had never typified a McCartney-related recording before, McCartney indeed has an unpolished sound; but its minimalist, intimate feel was – and remains – a refreshing change from much of McCartney's more ambitious recorded works. It is notable for the fact that McCartney, a multi-instrumentalist, performed the entire album (all instruments and voices) by himself, except for some backing vocals from his first wife, Linda McCartney. McCartney stated that he played "bass, drums, acoustic guitar, lead guitar, piano, Mellotron, organ, toy xylophone, and bow and arrow" on the album. Notable, also, is the use of a large number of instrumental tracks.

I first started putting this album (yes, the vinyl) into heavy rotation in 9th grade when my Beatles obsession began. I clearly can recall the first day I listened to it....what I was wearing, what my bedroom smelled like, and how each song made me feel. McCartney has a different feel from any of Paul's work with the Beatles. It includes several instrumental tracks, including "Singalong Junk" which may be the original karaoke love song. I consider "Maybe I'm Amazed," a beautiful love anthem written to his first wife Linda, to be my favorite song of all time.

Here is the video for Maybe I'm Amazed:

Life Soundtrack

I voluntarily tagged myself from Brett's blog for this fun meme. Feel free to join in, and comment me when you have posted your own.

PURPOSE:
The purpose of the soundtrack is to expose friends to new or different bands and discover one another's taste in music. One should not try to analyze the lyrics to figure out the person as lyrics may or may not reflect the person's own life. For example, some songs may be included that have a particular sentimental value, may be what one was simply listening to at a particular period of one's life, or may even be chosen for the lyrical content, but that can only be discovered by asking the compiler of the soundtrack, not by attempting to analyze and figure it out on one's own. Each individual has his or her own rationale for compiling the songs that he or she chooses and it may be extremely different from your own.

RULES:
1. You may choose any songs of your choosing for your soundtrack, but an artist can only appear once on your soundtrack (for example, I could not have two songs by The Smiths, but it is perfectly fine to have one song by The Smiths and another by Morrissey--who is the lead singer of The Smiths but later branched out on his own).
2. Originally the rule was to have the soundtrack fit on 2 CDs. My life is much more musically focused than most human beings, so I have allowed myself 3 CDs with a bonus EP :)

Genius!

I just downloaded the new version of iTunes. One of the new features is called Genius - you select a song you like, and Genius will scan through your library to find a custom playlist similar to the song you chose. I've made quite a few Genius lists, and everyone has been spectacular! Here are a few examples- I entered a song I love, and these artists were immediately linked:

Landed - Ben Folds
:Aqualung, Jason Mraz, Sufjan Stevens, Beck, Howie Day, Dave Matthews Band, Damien Rice, The Fray, John Mayer, Regina Spektor, Jet, Snow Patrol, Better Than Ezra

Dig - Incubus
: Angels and Airwaves, Deathcab for Cutie, Paramore, Stone Temple Pilots, OAR, Muse, Frou Frou, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Fall Out Boy, Muse

The Special Two - Missy Higgins
: Sarah McLachlan, Holly Brook, Sara Bareilles, Josh Kelly, Kelly Clarkson, Ingrid Michaelson, Colbie Callait, Imogen Heap, Justin Nouzuka, Annie Lennox

Every Breath You Take - The Police
: The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Clash, Duran Duran, Journey, Sting, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Barenaked Ladies, The Cars, Matchbox Twenty

Some of the combinations may sound odd at first, but it matches upbeat songs to others upbeat songs, and ballads to ballads. It's apparently based on feedback from listeners in the iTunes store, for what songs other people purchased. You can also link it up to purchase new stuff, but since I've got over 900 albums in my iTunes (yeah, I know I'm insane!) it helps me rediscover songs and artists I haven't listened to in a while. It doesn't always work like magic, but it's worth a try!

iPod A-Z

I decided to go through the vast majority of my iTunes library alphabetically last week. Between an hour commute each way, and a full-time workday, it doesn't take long for it to add up. I just finished C. I've listened to at least 2 songs per artist, and up to 5 albums per artist. This is what I've listened to so far:

A: A-Ha, ABBA, ABC, Across the Universe soundtrack, Adam Ant, Aimee Mann, Air Supply, Alanis Morissette, Alicia Keys, All American Rejects, Allison Krauss, Allred, Alone Together, America, Amy Grant, Andrea Bocelli, Ani DiFranco, Anna Nalick, Anonymous, Antsy Pants, Aretha Franklin, Avril Lavigne

B: B-52s, Bananarama, Bangles, Barbara Streisand, Barenaked Ladies, Baz Luhrmann, Beach Boys, Beastie Boys, Beck, Bee Gees, Bela Fleck, Belinda Carlisle, Ben Folds, Better Than Ezra, Billy Joel, Black Eyed Peas, Blue Merle, Bob Dylan, Boston, Boyz II Men, Brilliant Absence, Bryan Adams, Buffalo Springfield, Butterfly Boucher

C: Cake, Carol Channing, Carpenters, Carrie Underwood, The Cars, Cary Brothers, Cherie Call, Chicago, Chicago Soundtrack, Chris Daughtry, Chris Isaak, Christina Aguilera, The Clash, Colbie Caillat, Coldplay, Collin Hay, Collective Soul, Corey Hart, Corinne Bailey Rae, Counting Crows, The Cranberries, Culture Club, The Cure

I want to hear your opinion....what's the most bizzare or shocking music selection on my list?

Random thoughts on my last afternoon of freedom...

Yesterday I started my orientation with UofM Medical Center. Yesterday was a full day of patient safety, corporate culture, medication error reporting, HIPAA and JCAHO regulations, customer service videos, and all the other junk you're required to review upon hire at a hospital. This morning was a little better...ID badges, benefits, retirement, and parking. They let us leave at 11 am, so I spent the afternoon with Taylor unpacking. Yes, we've lived in our apartment for two months now...but with all the travel, we still had a lot to do. We cleared out about 15 boxes, organized our bedroom, spent 2 hours on Rosie's bedroom hurricane, and put up a few pictures on the wall. I start my job for real tomorrow.

My teeth have been hurting so bad lately. I'm not even sure it's my teeth, more like the nerves to my teeth. I had so much dental work done in November and December (over $3000 out of pocket after insurance) and I've never felt back to "normal." The left side's bite still feels wrong after two adjustments on trips to Cali, and the nerve flare ups have been occasional, but never less frequent than a few times a week. Since I got back from Utah, it's been constant pain on both sides. My new dental plan was in effect as of yesterday...and for the first time ever I have dual coverage. I need to talk to my new supervisor and see how soon I can take time off to see a dentist.

I'm so geeked for the NKOTB reuniting on Friday morning. If only I started work next week, I would SO be there...I'd fly out to Rockefeller Square and hold up my big sign while screaming till my lungs gave out. Yesterday, Taylor found a Russian legal download site where we found the whole NKOTB library for 10 cents per song. I downloaded about 30 songs. Unfortunately, my Ipod is on the fritz. The night before I left for Utah, my iTunes crashed, and I lost EVERYTHING. I had to do some mad file transferring to get it back, but I lost about 8 of my 25 GB of music. It's been syncing for 3 hours now...

Oh, and I got a call from Becky Anderson, the guidance counselor from MHS. I was having terrible luck getting anyone to call me back about renting MHS for the reunion, but she called me back (the day after Robin got the info). We chatted for about 10 minutes...she ended the call with "Glad to hear that you've turned out to be such a success." I smiled.

Some Early Morning Humor

This is dedicated to Mme Underwood, Mme Larsen, and the French professor I had at Ricks (I can't remember his name, but he reminded me of Mr. Bean):

May I just say that I've recently become obsessed with Flight of the Conchords? This is my favorite clip...although Taylor and I have recently purchased the first season on DVD, and have laughed till our guts hurt as we've watched it. If you haven't heard of them, just YouTube them... check out "Inner City Pressure" (a dead-on spoof of Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls"), "A Kiss is not a Contract," and "Business Time."

Dedicated to Taylor

I recently fell in love with Muse's music, and found this visually stimulating video on YouTube this morning. This one's dedicated my Tayviator...together we ARE invincible.

One Kool Kat...

This morning I thought it would be fun to post a blog about my dear friend Kathryn. We met a few months ago at her Nikki Forova gig at Genghis Cohen (Melrose and Fairfax). She is a very talented musician, who plays a mean viola. We hit it off immediately, while bonding over good food, Keane, and ex-Utah resident stories. We really only saw each other a few times while I was actually in California, with LA gigs and an evening in Pasadena with Lizzie. She's in the music biz, and has been affected by the writers strike. She happened to be in Utah this week to see her family, and graciously offered to give my dad a viola concert in the ICU. She played some classical, hymns, and a little Frou Frou. My dad has been raving about how beautiful the music was, and I know that families all over the unit were coming out in the hall to hear the concert.

So what does a good friend do when you need a break from family crises? Take you out for fondue and dueling pianos! Sure, The Melting Pot and Tavernacle was my idea...but she drove. We had a blast in two places that are as un-Utah as you get (we've revised our long-time resident identities to "California Girls") Above is a picture from our night out, laughing at all the drunk people at the Tavernacle.

My concert addiction

Current mood: nostalgic

If anyone knows me well, I've always been a concert junkie. Ever since I first saw New Kids On The Block at the Memorial Coloseum in Portland in 1991, I was hooked. As a teenager, I always wanted to go to concerts, especially pop-alternative groups. In fact, once I had a #2 wristband for Duran Duran, but my parents wouldn't take me and I couldn't find anyone to go with (this was about a month after I moved to Utah.) Those seats would have been awesome!

The next concert I went to was in 1997 for U2's Popmart Tour. It was at the old Rice Stadium at the UofU. That concert was great! I went with so many cool people, and the showmanship and music was incredible! I thought that show could never been beaten in excitement, and to date it's still one of my favorite concerts.

Sometimes people ask me all the concerts I've been to, so here's a list off the top of my head. I've excluded the opening acts and local/LDS performers because the list would be infinitely longer, unless their show was terribly awesome or influential:

NKOTB 1991

U2 1997, 2005

Savage Garden 1997

Lilith Fair 1998 (Sarah McLachlan, Paula Cole, Cowboy Junkies, Lisa Loeb, etc)

Weird Al Yankovich 1999

Chicago 2000

They Might Be Giants 2000

Sarah McLachlan 1998, 2004 (the night Taylor decided he wanted to marry me)

Barenaked Ladies 2002, 2004

Sugar Ray 2003

Matchbox Twenty 2003

Dixie Chicks 2003?

Butterfly Boucher 2004 (twice)

Sting 2005

Depeche Mode 2005

Howard Jones 2005

Howie Day 2004, 2005

Michelle Branch 2004

Maroon5 2004

Kelly Clarkson 2004, 2006 (Rosie's first concert)

John Mayer 2004, 2006, 2007

Keane 2006, 2007

Rob Thomas 2005

Anna Nalick 2005

Missy Higgins 2005 (an Aussie, one of the best undiscovered talents EVER)

I know there are more that I am missing, but this is just the big name concerts I've been to. I'm sure I've been to at least 50 smaller-name concerts and local-type shows. I'm always up for a show, so if you get extra tickets or want someone to go with, give me a holla!

But the reason I wrote this blog was to write about my adventure with Lizzie last weekend for the John Mayer/Ben Folds/Rocco DeLuca concert at the Hollywood Bowl. I purchased the tickets in March to go with Taylor, but it didn't work out for him to go since he's neck-deep in training at Jet U. So Lizzie and I went, and by the advice of a coworker, we went to Pasadena to the stop for the BowlBus Shuttle. I was told about the madness of the Bowl traffic and parking, so we thought we'd be responsible and economical and take the shuttle. Unfortunately, I read the website wrong and we missed the last shuttle. We had to drive to Hollywood anyway. We drove for almost two hours looking for a parking spot, and the cheapest one was $30 almost 2 miles away. We didn't have anough cash on us to park at most places. So we drove around and around and got hit on by this Haitian Rapper in his funky van, waved to a Raider in a limo (I can't remember his him right off), had a few near-death experiences on Cahuenga, and minute by minute missed more of the show. We finally got in touch with Lizzie's cousin Patrick who lives in Hollywood. He saved the day by letting us park at his place, and then dropping us off at the show. By the time we got seated, it was 9:45, and John Mayer was 2/3 through his set. We'd missed Rocco and Ben Folds entirely

But the songs we did catch were awesome (Dreaming with a Broken Heart, Why Georgia, Waiting on the World, Stop this Train, Vultures,Slow Dancing in a Burning Room, Gravity, and I'm Gonna Find Another You) I wasn't too broken up about missing the rest of John's show since I saw him less than a year ago when Continuum came out. I was however, very very bummed to miss Ben Folds. He doesn't tour very much, so that was my only downside to the night.

I have to say, though...Lizzie makes every situation enjoyable. Even though we missed so much of the concert, we jammed to some good tunes, laughed at the hillarity of the other people madly trying to find parking, and we had fun grabbing hot chocolate with Patrick after the show. I was so tired after it all, that Lizzie drove home and I crashed on her couch.

It's nights like this I'll never forget!

Missed Very Much

Today at work I was having a conversation with a co-worker about music, and was lamenting my missing CDs from my March car break-in. He said, "Okay, I'm sick of hearing about all the CDs you USED to have. Go ahead and replace them and get over it!" So here is the list of the CDs I had stolen....and miss terribly. If any of you have ways to help me "replace" them....give me a holla!

TMBG-The Early Years (1&2)
James and Morgan Garrett-Songs of the Savior
Madonna-The Immaculate Collection, Something to Remember
Sarah McLachlan-Surfacing, Mirrorball
Mo-Tab-Consider the Lilies
Eclipse-Three Kings
Jericho Road-Jericho Road
Sting-Ten Summoners Tales, Brand New Day, Mercury Falling, Dream of Blue
Turtles, Fields of Gold (Best of Sting)
The Police- Greatest Hits (original and remastered versions)
Savage Garden-Affirmation
U2-All that you can't leave behind, Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum
O Brother Where Art Thou stk
Muppet Show-Twenty years of mayhem soundtrack
Notting Hill soundtrack
My Best Friend's Wedding soundtrack
Matchbox 20-Mad Season
Dixie Chicks-Home
Allison Krauss-New Favorite
Peter Breinholt-Heartland
Howard Jones-Greatest Hits
Erasure-Greatest Hits
Now 6
Viva Voce-all 2002-2003 concert archive recordings

CAN YOU SEE WHY I'M SO UPSET? These are just the replaceable ones. I have lost some of my best mix CDs and some local/rare stuff that can never be replaced. I know there's other stuff, but this is all that I could think of right now.

*sigh* I feel better now.
