Helmet Head

This weekend we bought Rosie a new helmet. Between bike riding and skateboarding, I've been pretty adamant about Rosie keeping her brain protected. She hasn't had a bike here very long, but I've been paranoid every time she went out riding without a helmet. In Michigan and Georgia, I always saw kids wearing helmets, and in California it was about half of the time. Since we've been back in Utah, I have not seen one kid in our neighborhood wearing a helmet!

I wanted to have Rosie be an example to her peers, showing it was cool to wear a helmet. I let her choose any helmet she wanted (and of course, she chose the $30 one) Today Rosie came into the house sobbing. Some of the neighbor kids were taunting and teasing her about wearing a helmet. It made me so sad.

I have read multiple operative reports of patients with brain injuries, often caused by bike crashes. So many traumatic brain injuries could have been avoided if these people had worn a helmet. I'm curious now...how many of you wear a helmet, or require your kids to wear a helmet when riding a bike?

If we leave our circle, my kids have to wear a helmet. But they love their helmets so much sometimes they wear them anyways. I can't believe you have seen so many without them! Seems like most in our neighborhood wear them. Oh well--I'd rather my kids get made fun of than be a vegetable!

My grandson is required to wear a helmet when he rides his bike, scooter, skateboard, 4 wheeler...(pretty much anything that has wheels I guess you could say). *I* however am a stryrofoabic (is that a word?) therefore I will not wear a helmet because that's whats in them.

P.S. I bet the other parents will put helmets on their kids now that somebody is wearing one. Give them time to get to the store over the weekend.

One more thing, the kids in our neighborhood all wear helmets. It's rare to see somebody with out one.

You can tell her about the time a helmet saved my bacon. I was riding my bike to work one morning in the dark and hit a curb I didn't see. I went down and tried to catch myself with my hands, but one of my wrists buckled under (and I broke my arm!) and my head hit the sidewalk pretty hard. Fortunately, I was wearing my helmet. The force of the impact actually cracked my helmet. I'm sure I would have had a concussion (or worse!) had I not been wearing my helmet. I wasn't even going very fast, but that ground comes up to meet you awfully quick, and awfully hard!

Ummmm if you met the people I've worked with who have TBIs, you would INSIST upon the helmet no matter what. Those are terrible.

Never had one as a kid, but have heard enough stories that my kids have too. I really worried until we finally found one small enough to fit my little guy in the bike trailer.

Sometimes I feel like a dork wearing mine, but I'd rather be a dork than dead!

We make Haley wear one, but we really don't have a lot of space to ride unless we go to a park, and unfortunatly there is little time for those kind of outings especially with the way the school systems are here in CA. Kids can be cruel, but you are doing the right thing.

Y is not yet at the age where she can ride a bike but when she does start she'll have 2 choices: either ride the bike in small circles around the driveway (which isn't much fun) or wear a helmet. Unfortunately kids are cruel but eventually they will get used to seeing it and move on to something else.

Kaden wears a helmet, it's a hot wheel one with silver flames on the side. I think the cooler it looks ther cooler it is to wear one. Rosie's helmut looks pretty dang cool!

Aww how sad! In California it's actually the law for anyone under 18 to wear a helmet. Here in Sydney- helmets are the law for EVERYONE!

I'm big on scare tactics. If she feels bad about being made fun of- show her pics of people in wheelchairs or hooked up to monitors in hospitals. I know that may sound harsh to some people- but I'd do it!

The only reason I stopped sucking my thumb was because my mom told me my nails would fall off. Sometimes scaring kids works!
